1999 Week Three
May 28, 1999 Lawrenceburg Motorcycle Speedway
From: Speedway Ziggy
The third night of action at L.M.S. got off to a fiery start on the hard
packed blue groove track. In the first scratch heat, Pro Am flat tracker
and occasional speedway rider "Naughty" Nick Hummel got a dream gate from the
outside leading by a wheel over Patrick Reynolds as they entered turn one.
Reynolds played his part and hugged the pole giving Hummel plenty of room
as they approached the apex. Hummel, who had entered the turn with more
speed than he could handle, slid off the groove into the marbles and veered
towards the crash wall. Reynolds (riding for Barnacle Bill's Leathers and
Western Hills Honda) inherited the lead and proceeded to pull away to win
by nearly a half lap with Hummel being relegated to the rear of the field.
Back in the pits, Reynolds who had not even had time to remove his helmet,
was approached by a very emotional Hummel who exclaimed: "what are you
trying to do - kill me". A surprised Reynolds answered with a very
succinct "Huh"? An argument ensued with Reynolds calmly trying to explain
to Hummel what had actually happened. An angry Hummel later vowed to quit
speedway, apparently unable to handle the sports intensity.
In the Handicap Main Event, "Jammin" Joel Brown proved for the second week
in a row that he has what it takes by winning from the 10 yard line. 0 yard
liner Herschel Benkert road a tight line on his new lay down Jawa to lead
the first two laps with Brown pressuring him on the inside while 60 yard
liner Patrick Reynolds patiently bided his time in third. Going into turn
one on lap three, Brown moved Benkert over and Reynolds quickly followed him
through. Brown and Reynolds then circulated the track in close formation
with Brown successfully blocking Reynolds' attempts. In turn four of the
last lap, Reynolds got inside of Brown and drove up the inside with his front
wheel lifting high as he went for maximum traction. At the checkers, it was
so close that neither rider was sure who was the victor. The win was awarded
to the young, talented Brown who is now fully sponsored by Craig Bracken
Racing and Western Hills Honda.
