Justin Boyle scored a stunning victory over SRA National Champion Scott Brant in the Scratch Main Event at Wild West Speedway in Winchester last Saturday.
Brant was undefeated in his three heat races and chose gate four. Boyle then selected gate three. Shaun Harmatiuk took gate two, Denny Scopellite picked the pole, and Nate Perkins was left with the outside.
Boyle was first out of the blocks and cut to the pole while Brant went to the outside in turn one and used it to take the lead on the back straight. Brant hit a rut in turn four which forced him off the throttle and allowed Boyle to retake the lead. Brant spent the next two laps closing the gap on Boyle and tried the outside again in turn one on the last lap. Boyle hit a bump in turn two which sent him into Brant's line forcing the champion to slow. This allowed the 17 year old an insurmountable advantage which he held to the checkered flag. Brant had to settle for second, Harmatiuk finished third, Scopellite was fourth, and Perkins took fifth.
Tim Gomez won the first six Second Division mains of 2004, but John Stunkard ended his streak. Mark Baldwin was first out of the gate, but missed turn one and took himself and Gomez deep into the corner. Stunkard hugged the pole and took the lead. Gomez recovered and scrambled to cut into Stunkard's lead in hopes of preserving his streak. Gomez was on Stunkard's back tire entering the final corner, but Stunkard was able to beat the 15 year old to the checkered flag. Baldwin finished third and Eloy Medellin was fourth.
Kerry Conner took the lead on the restart of the Third Division Main Event, but Tom Hamilton went by on the inside in turn three and never looked back on his way to his second main event win of the season. Mike Boyle finished second, Steve Dziadus Jr. was third, Conner finished fourth, and Mark Sincavage was fifth.
Ricky Wells was victorious in the First Division Youth Main ahead of Jason Ramirez, Krystal Cramer, and Jay Ricketts. Tamara Krips won the Second Division Youth Main with Ricky Valdez coming in second, Nathan Galvin in third, Eddie Conner finishing fourth, Joey Holt in fifth, and Blake Bowen taking sixth.
The next event at Wild West will not be held on its usual Saturday night. It will be held this Sunday due to the AMA National in Victorville on Saturday. The event will be the Ken Maely Cup with a perpetual trophy being presented to the winner.
