August 27, 2005 - Costa Mesa

Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz scored his second main event victory of the week and first at Costa Mesa this season in front of a large crowd as the world famous bullring oval hosted Harley Night.
Tommy Hedden got into the tapes before they went up and was penalized. The next attempt ended in turn one when several riders came together and left Ryan Fisher on the ground. Fisher was banished to the penalty line next to Hedden on the restart. On the third try Schwartz launched into the lead from gate two and beat polesitting Randy DiFrancesco to turn one. Schwartz exiting turn two with a comfortable lead that he stretched each lap. Schwartz, who also won at Industry Hills on Wednesday, cruised to the victory much to the delight of the large crowd. DiFrancesco was second, Fisher finished third, Hedden was fourth, and Chris Manchester finished fifth.
With the eight-man Handicap Main Event having now been shortened to six laps turn one has been deemed more critical than before. With three riders lined up on the 10 yard line and four more on the 30 it could be potentially disastrous. The field got through the first corner smoothly with Dario Galvin in the lead ahead of Skyler Greyson and DiFrancesco beating his fellow 30 yarders and coming out third on the back straight. DiFrancesco missed turn three, though, dramatically slowing the field behind him with the exception of Shaun Harmatiuk who squeaked by on the inside. Galvin was overtaken by Greyson on the back straight during the third lap and Harmatiuk went by as well. Greyson's lead lasted until he entered turn one too high on lap five and allowed Harmatiuk past. Harmatiuk was unchallenged the rest of the way for his first win of 2005. Chris Kerr finished second, Nate Perkins was third, Brian Starr finished fourth, and Greyson was fifth.
John Stunkard, who won last week's Dick Kreps Cup, started in gate four and beat his fellow competitors to turn one and handily defeated them to win the Support Main Event for the second week in a row. Eloy Medellin was second, Rudy Laurer finished third, and Chris Metoyer was fourth.
Newcomer Mike Lane was leading the Support B Main Event when a crash brought out the red flag. On the restart last week's winner Mike Bershee, took the lead. Bershee was comfortably in front when Troy Robinson went down in turn two. Robinson was able to get up, but his bike was abandoned in the middle of the race track. Bershee must've been shocked when he came around and found a bike in the middle of the racing line. Fortunately, he was alert enough to lay his machine down and avoid disaster. The race was awarded to Bershee with Lane getting second, Mark Skeels was third, Mike Boyle was fourth, Robinson was fifth, and Justin Hassan was sixth.
There won't be any racing at Costa Mesa this Saturday due to the Labor Day holiday weekend. Racing returns to the Orange County Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 10 with the annual Warren Russell Cup.
