Chris Manchester capped a perfect night by winning the main event to take home the Warren Russell Cup at Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.
Manchester started on the pole and held a slight advantage entering turn one but went a little deep and almost relinquished the lead. He was able to cut back quick enough to prevent Mike Faria from jetting to the front. Faria chased Manchester the entire four laps but couldn't get close enough to force a mistake. It was Manchester first to the checkered flag, Faria was second, Bobby Schwartz finished third, Shaun McConnell was fourth, and Shaun Harmatiuk finished fifth.
The first of three rounds began with Jimmy Fishback leading for two laps before going down and bringing out a red flag. Ryan Fisher led the restart all the way to the final turn when he lost a chain and ended up in a heap in turn four. Charlie Venegas took evasive action but hit Fisher's machine and went down hard. Venegas was awarded the victory but was done for the evening with a shoulder injury.
Faria scored his first victory by holding off Chris Kerr in race two. Manchester beat McConnell in the next race. Schwartz completed round one with a victory over Bart Bast.
Round two started with "Cowboy" Bobby Krips defeating Bast. Faria beat Buck Blair to win the next race. Manchester made it two in a row with a win over Kerr in race 11. Schwartz remained perfect when he beat McConnell to finish the second round.
Faria won his third straight race to open the final round of heats. Bast beat Fishback for his first victory. Manchester matched Faria's perfect evening by beating Schwartz in race 17. Billy Hiles brought the curtain down on the heats with a victory that put him into the semis.
A runoff to determine the final three positions in the semis was won by Shaun Harmatiuk with Eddie Castro finishing second and Kerr edging Fishback for the final spot in the semis.
The first semi had Manchester taking the win with Schwartz following him into the semis in second. Faria was the victor in the other semi with Harmatiuk finishing second after taking advantage of a Bast mistake on lap two. McConnell was victorious in the Last Chance to take the final spot in the main.
The Support Main was restarted twice and marred by a crash that sent Steve Murray to the hospital with multiple injuries. On the final attempt, Rudy Laurer emerged victorious with Chris Metoyer finishing second and Rick Valdez in third.
John Zuber led the first three laps of the Support B Main Event, but went very wide in the final corner and allowed Mark Lane to sneak by and steal the victory at the finish line. Mike Boyle finished third, Kim Stevens was fourth, Mark Skeels finished fifth, and Troy Robinson was sixth.
Jason Ramirez was victorious in the Youth First Division Main Event with Ricky Valdez finishing second, Gino Manzares coming in third, and Austin Novratil finishing fourth. Cory Williamson won the his first Youth Second Division Main Event while Joey Holt came in second, Chad Hoyt finished third, and Dylan Black was fourth.
