"Nasty" Nate Perkins defeated three of America's most decorated riders to score the first Scratch Main event of his career at the Grand at Industry Hills on Wednesday.
The start of the Scratch Main was delayed when 2000 National Champion Charlie Venegas touched the tapes and was excluded. On the second try Perkins and two-time National Champion Bobby Schwartz got to turn one at the same time, but Perkins had the advantage of an inside starting position to get him to the precious blue groove first. Perkins held a clear advantage on the back straight and Schwartz chased him the entire way, but Perkins kept his composure and fought off all challenges for the win. Schwartz crossed the line second, McConnell was third, and Venegas was credited with fourth. The win capped an evening in which the rising star won four of his five races.
The first heat brought bad news to last week's winner Buck Blair who suffered and engine failure while Shaun Harmatiuk took the victory. McConnell passed Denny Scopellite to take the next heat. Venegas handed Perkins his only defeat in the following heat. Tommy Hedden completed round one with a win over Schwartz.
Venegas began round two with his second victory. McConnell followed suit with his second win in the next race. Perkins began his winning streak in race 15. Schwartz held off Brian Starr to win the final race of the second round.
Dario Galvin opened the last round with a win. Perkins beat Schwartz and McConnell in the next race. Harmatiuk beat Venegas for his second win in race 24. Scopellite completed the heats with a win over Starr.
The inside gates provided a big advantage in the semis as Perkins and McConnell moved on to the main from the first semi and Venegas and Schwartz transferred from the second semi. Scopellite used gate one to help win the Consolation for the third consecutive week.
Michael Hernandez dominated the competition to win his first Second Division Main of the season. Rudy Laurer was second, Steve Dziadus, Jr. finished third, and Kim Stevens was fourth.
Mark Skeels led the Third Division Main for nearly two laps before drifting wide and handing the lead to Vince Giamformaggio. Giamformaggio made no mistakes the rest of the way and won his first main. Robert Glamuzina was second, Wayne Isaac finished third, Skeels was fourth, Hugh Randolph finished fifth, and Lee Crecelius was sixth.
Krystal Cramer defeated Jason Ramirez and Austin Novratil to win the Youth First Division Main, Joey Holt beat Russell Green to take the Youth Second Division Main, and Kyle Hedden beat Rocco Scopellite for the Pee Wee Main victory.
