Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell ended his season-long dry spell by winning the main event at The Grand in Industry Hills.
The four-rider field was reduced to three when Charlie "The Edge" Venegas got into the tapes and was excluded. After the riders restaged and the tapes went up, McConnell beat Bryan Yarrow and Tommy Hedden into turn one. McConnell had a little breathing room on the first lap but Yarrow eliminated any margin for error on the second lap when he glued himself to the leader's back tire. Yarrow tried everything he knew throughout the balance of the race but couldn't get past the wily veteran. McConnell was first to the checkered flag, Yarrow was second, Hedden finished third, and Venegas was credited with fourth.
Ryan Fisher began things with a victory over Nate Perkins. Shaun Harmatiuk held off Bobby Schwartz for the win. Bart Bast won his first race at the track. Yarrow defeated McConnell in race 10. Venegas beat Hedden in the final race of round one.
The second round began with Hedden defeating Fisher. Bast made it two in a row by beating Perkins. Schwartz, celebrating his 49th birthday, was awarded race 18 after Bobby Krips fell. Venegas won the next race for his second straight victory. McConnell beat Jimmy Fishback to close out round two.
McConnell handed Bast his first loss in round three's first race. Hedden scored his second straight victory. Venegas kept his perfect score by winning race 26. Fisher scored his second victory of the evening in the next race. Schwartz won his second straight race by defeating Perkins and Yarrow. Harmatiuk and Yarrow finished first and second, respectively, in a runoff to earn the final semi slots.
Venegas trapped the field from gate four and romped to the win in the first semi and Yarrow followed him to get the other transfer spot. Hedden's victory along with McConnell's second place finish earned them the final two spots in the main. Bast was victorious in the Consolation.
The first running of the Second Division Main ended in a heap in turn three and the referee penalized Rudy Laurer on the restart. Bryan Buffington led the restart for three laps while Laurer navigated past the other two riders. Buffington had the win locked up when he nearly fell exiting the final corner. Laurer challenged the leader in a drag race to the finish but Buffington recovered in time to win. Laurer had to settle for second, Eloy Medellin finished third, and DeWayne Stark was fourth.
Mike Bershee led the Third Division Main Event from start to finish to claim his first ever main event victory. Troy Robinson was second, Robert Glamuzina finished third, and John Zuber was fourth.
Dominic Manzares defeated Austin Santana and Trevor Sargent to win the Pee Wee Main Event. Krystal Cramer passed all four of her competitors on the first lap, despite a 50 yard handicap, and ran away with the Youth Main Event. Gino Manzares finished second, Joey Holt finished third, Russell Green was fourth, and Phillip Harmatiuk was fifth.
