An overcast night, a small crowd and a sadly depleted rider showing summed up this week’s event at Fast Fridays. One reason was the fact that the following night was the first round of the AMA National at Costa Mesa. The other reason was the weather. Two nights before the Auburn-Sacramento-Foothills area was treated to an outstanding lightning display. It went on for 3 hours, one flash after the other, frequently right after the last, but with no gap in between exceeding 10 seconds. It was the most incredible weather conditions that I have ever seen anywhere. Back to the speedway report.
Charlie Venegas made the trip up from SoCal before returning the next day to compete in the National. His visit was rewarded by a scratch main event win. As always, Charlie made a great gate and lead till the finish. Devin Defreece had his first, long overdue, handicap main win. The battle however took place behind him, with Greg Hooten holding off a ferocious Bart Bast.
