The father-son duo of Harlan Bast and Bart Bast each topped their respective divisions in the Fast Friday's season point's race Friday night at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn. The Bast name is well known in Speedway racing and as the last night to accumulate 2013 season points came to an end Friday night the elder Bast led Division III and his son Bart led Division I heading into the Fast Fridays track championships next week. Bart Bast has led his division all season and finished with 2260 points easily outdistanced second place finisher Billy Janniro who finished with 1993. But for Harlan Bast it has been a week to week tight chase with fellow Division III rider John Peters. Bast finished the season with 624 points and Peters finished with 593 points.
The season point's race victory was number 18 for the younger Bast, but the first time ever that he and his father have won together. "I won the first one in 1986 then I was gone racing other places until 1991 then I had a streak of 10 or 11," Bast said. "Dad was all into it, he's been watching it on the website, his division was close."
Next week the final points tally comes into play as the Fast Friday's track championships in all divisions play out. The top 16 riders in Division I along with the top eight riders in Division II and Division III will race for their division championships.
Billy Janniro picked up another impressive Division I scratch main event with a perfect performance. Janniro won his heat, semi-final, and then the main event in convincing style. As the season winds down and the 2013 national championship is approaching Janniro is once again favored heavily. Riding out of lane four on the outside, which never seems to bother him, he came in ahead of Bart Bast in second, Bryan Yarrow who was third and Charlie Venegas who was fourth. Janniro led from start to finish with Bast giving serious chase but he was unable to catch Janniro who worked the outside line like nobody else can.
Venegas, still hot from last week's scratch main event win, took the handicap main event riding off the 50 yard line. Venegas, who finished third in both his heat and semi-final, pulled it together when it counted for a win in the main event. Bart Bast was second, and Bryan Yarrow was third.
Division II saw a very impressive win as local rider Michael Achilles pulled off his first main event of the season. Racing hard all season and a consistent top three finisher, Achilles waited for his chance following leader Paul Sunburn and when Sanburn bobbled just a little on the last lap Achilles made his move passing inside to take and hold the lead for the checkered flag. "I feel pretty good, it's been a long season, I finally got a main event win," Achilles said. "I worked on the bike a little, Charlie (Venegas) got me to change my back tire, I did and I won." Chris Popanz finished first in season points in Division II with 773, followed by Nick Dion with 653.Achilles finished with 671 points and fourth in his division.
Lawrence McNutt, with numerous season second place finishes picked up his second Division III main event win Friday night. Lars Kotrlik was second, and Glenn Scott was third. Luke Becker was unbeatable in his Youth 250cc Division. Becker won every race he was in including the main event. Broc Nicol was second and Colton Hicks third in the main. Becker looks to figure heavily when the Youth National Championships take place September 6 at Fast Fridays.
The Extreme Sidecars made another exciting stop at Fast Fridays with show stopping racing action. Five 1100cc three-wheeled made the trip north from Southern California and put on a fast paced racing program. The team of driver Joe Jones and rider Johnny Glover won the main event. Dan Cahoon won the Run What U Brung main event.
