Friday night at Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway in the Gold Country Fairgrounds it was Auburn’s Bart Bast and Billy Janniro duking it out going first and second in the Division I scratch and handicap main events. Janniro and Bast were first or second in both events, Janniro winning the scratch main and Bast taking the handicap main event.
A special Hooligans V-Twin program highlighted the night’s program as the big bikes hit the Fast Fridays track. Pete Demas of Sacramento brought his Harley Davison 883 Sportster and was the winner of the main event and took home the $200 purse put up by Fast Friday’s sponsor Auburn Dodge. Four V-Twin riders showed up for the event but it was only Demas and JJ Martynse that survived the heats and ran the main event. “I have been road racing for 25 years, but this is my first flat track race,” said Demas. I have been coming up here for 20 years and watching these guys race and always said one day I am going to go out there and race. I guess today was that day,” he said. “The bike (Harley-Davidson Sportster) has a lot of sentimental value, it has 130,00 miles on it and it was my dad’s bike. He rode if for about 15 years all around Sacramento with his little dog riding on the tank.”
Billy Janniro continues to dominate the scratch program and with the Fast Fridays track championship and the AMA Speedway National Championship final round just around the corner, Janniro looks primed for both events. Again, Janniro won every race in the scratch program including the main event. Bart Bast, who continues to have a lock on the Fast Friday’s point’s race still leads Janniro by 177 points after the August 12 meeting, finished second. Bast fought hard charging at Janniro from second place the entire four lap race but Janniro stayed ahead of Bast on the inside for the win. Bast was second, Bob Hicks was third and Daniel Faria fourth.
In the handicap main event it was a different story and the tables were turned. This time it was Bast that held Janniro in check for the handicap main event. Bast followed Daniel Faria, who was having a great night and had the race in the bag until the last turn where he wobbled a little going wide. Bast took advantage of the misstep to take the lead for the win. Janniro followed Bast in for second and Dillon Ruml was third. It was a very exciting race as fans cheered Bast as he took the win in the last turn.
In Division II Jeremy Estes is again on a roll. Estes started the season in Division III. After four Division III main event wins, Estes started riding in Division II and again found his way to the winner’s podium on a regular basis. Estes has now won three Division II main events in a row and looks to keep the party going. Estes 20, will now be moved back to the 40 yard line starting next week and could see a Division I ride before the season is over. “It’s finally starting to come around for me, my dad has been helping me out a lot,” Estes said. “This my fifth week in Division II and I have won four main events, he said. The goal for Estes has always been to ride in Division I. “I set some goals, wrote them down, and let’s see if I can accomplish them.”
Another rider getting comfortable on the winner’s podium is Division III’s Casey Cornilsen who now has four Division III main event win so far this season. Cornilsen won his heat race before winning the main event handicapped off the thirty yard line. Cornilsen now moves back to the 40 yard line next week and look for this rider to also pack his bags and maybe make a move to Division II before the season ends. Cameron Beck was second and Ray Holt Jr. Jr. was third. Cornilsen also leads the track point’s race in Division III with only one more night on September 2 to collect points for the track championships on September 9.
The Youth 250 A program was marred by a few crashes that took Colton Hicks and Cameron Krezman out of the running before the evening was over, but was won by Auburn’s Kyle Cunningham. Cunningham has been on a roll winning his second Youth 250 A main event in a row at Fast Fridays. Cunningham stayed out of the way through the crashes to win the main event. Landon Norton was second and Anthony Dion was third. Timmy Dion picked up his first main event win on a 250cc bike in the Youth 250 B division. Dion recently made the upgrade to the bigger bike from his 150cc after the youth national championships in late July. Greg Moore was second and Logan Hedden was third.
Next week there will be not be speedway racing on Friday night August 26 because Fast Fridays will present a special night of professional flat track racing on Saturday night August 27. The Flat Track Star Invitational will roll into the Gold Country Fairgrounds for a first ever event. Sixteen top flat trackers will compete in a program scoring like a national speedway championship event. Evening should be a not to miss event for flat track fans and speedway fans.
