1996 Paris Speedway Race Results
September 1, 1996 - Paris Division One Championships
by Kim Gregory
At Paris Speedway The Muszynski brothers were very strong tonight, and as a repeat of
other events here, took the win. Gary Hesmer, who is at his best on
a rough track, took third, leaving fourth spot for his young cousin
Chris Hesmer.
The second biggest event of the Canadian Speedway year began at 6PM,
with a crowd of about three hundred spectators. The celebrity of the
night was Ron Hoare (Secretary - Treasurer of the Veterans Speedway Racing
Association ). The program ran very
smoothly, ( the twenty heats were finished in an hour and 40 minutes)
and the final was over by 8PM. The track was well watered before the
racing, making it safer than the previous days race, but still
developed some tricky spots in turn four that caused some surprises.
The biggest surprise of the night was that the winner of the last two
Canadian National Championships, our number one rider, John Kehoe
failed to make the final. He won the event last year, but this was
his first event of the season on the Paris track. He was beat by Sobec
and Chris in his semi final, so only made the consolation race. Jeff
Orosz also missed making the final by only 50 feet when he tumbled in
the last corner of the last lap of his semi final. He had been holding
second place before the fall, and had to push his bike over the finish
line. Francois Grenier from Quebec had engine failure in his second
heat, and Len Dillon withdrew from racing after his third heat,
allowing reserves Darren Altmayer and Kim to Gregory fill in. My first
encounter with the bumps in turn four sent me into the fence in heat 16,
but I managed to stay on the bike as it crossed into the infield, missed
the starting gate post, the referee and the flag marshals!
The points were awarded 4 for first, 3 for second, 2 for third and 1 for
fourth. The points after 20 heats determined the top 8 riders for the
two semi finals. The top two riders from each semi final moved up to the
final, the last two moved to the consolation race. Riders were awarded
$5 for each point in the heats, and bonus money for the final and
consolation race.
