From Gary Roberts
History was made on Saturday evening, with the re-opening after 5 years
of Cal Expo Speedway track. The event was an outstanding success, with
everything working fine for a first night. There was some great racing,
and every indication that this will maintain the momentum which Fast
Fridays has established.

If anything fell short of perfection, it would be the track. At last,
it looks like El Nino has left us alone and for the first time this
year, the weather was hot and dry. There was certainly no shortage of
dirt on the track and at the start of racing it looked smooth. But as
the evening went on it got a bit bumpy, which slowed down the lower
division races. But it did nothing to stop two outstanding Division 1 main
events.
Billy Janniro impressed everyone by holding off a heavy duty challenge
from 5 riders each with at least a decade more experience than himself.
Jim Sisemore had an excellent win in the scratch main, from the gate,
but the real race was behind him, with Bast, Janniro and Faria,
finishing three abreast across the line.
I believe there is excellent potential at Cal Expo. There is certainly
no shortage of top riders or lower division riders. The Division 3
class was so oversubscribed that there were 4 heat races, instead of
the normal 3. Cal Expo is situated in the middle of Sacramento, a city
with a population of 370,000.
One last thought. - What other sport is available in Sacramento, where
people can come and watch a National Champion every week?

With a small crowd on hand speedway returned to the Arena at Cal Expo
in Sacramento, California...I know this is at least the third time
we have raced on the California Exposition Fairgrounds maybe more...
I will let Gary Roberts make the official report. As I know that he
has a lot of information to pass on.
Jim Sisemore looked great in winning the scratch main over Bart Bast
and Mike Faria...
The track turned really brutal as the night wore on. I know that
there was not enough time to get the track in shape and it rutted up
late in the evening. This track is about the size of Costa Mesa and
the riders had some adjusting to do for the smaller than Auburn track.
A couple of riders not seen earlier this season started were Bob Hicks
and Robert Curry. Overall a good night of racing on a touch track..
Cheers,
